Automatic Addressing

The SMI master module makes it possible to re-address the connected SMI
drives.
The connected SMI drives are determined be the unique slave ID. When
automatic addressing is started, all SMI drives with SMI address 0 are written and
then sorted in ascending order.
When sorting, maximum 16 SMI drives are taken into account. If there are more
than 16 SMI drives, the system remains at address 0 with an address conflict.
Automatic addressing takes up to 60 seconds.

Personal injury or property damage possible if power is interrupted when
assigning addresses
If the power supply is interrupted while the SMI master is assigning addresses,
the SMI drive addresses may be transposed.
The behavior of the SMI drives during travel commands is then unpredictable.
This can lead to personal injury and property damage.
In this case, the system must be checked completely and switched off until
recommissioned.

Auto-Replace

The Auto-Replace function provides support when replacing SMI drives, e.g., if
an SMI drive is to be replaced due to a defect, and automatically transfers the
slave address and drive configuration of the replaced drive to the new drive. The
Auto-Replace function detects the new SMI drive at any address and can also
resolve a possible address conflict with existing drives.
The SMI master module saves a copy of the drive configuration in persistent
memory. If the Auto-Replace function is executed, the new drive first obtains the
SMI address of the replaced SMI drive and then its drive configuration, which
contains the parameters for fixed positions POS 1 and POS 2.
A comment programmed using the SMI Configurator or the IEC function blocks in
the I/O module is maintained and also transferred.
If several new drives are added once a drive has been removed, an unfavorable
constellation of SMI addresses when the Auto-Replace function is activated can
cause the drive configuration and comment of the removed drive to be
overwritten or deleted by one of the new drives.
Restoration of the data is then only possible using the SMI Configurator or IEC
function blocks.
If the Auto-Replace function is deactivated, then new drives overwrite the
configuration saved in the SMI master module of the SMI drive replaced and
delete the programmed comments.
