EXTERNAL DEVICE CONTROL

The ModuLab XM ECS system is capable of controlling external devices such as
mercury drop electrodes, heaters, stirrers, flow controllers and fans, by switching
them on and off during an experiment.
Each potentiostat fitted to the system has three control outputs, so that an 8-slot
system with a potentiostat in each slot is capable of controlling a total of 24
devices altogether.
Control outputs are available only on the potentiostats, not on the optional
modules (HV module, femto ammeter, etc.). If a slot contains an optional module,
the control output connections for the slot are not used.
The potentiostat does not supply any specific voltage or current signals to
external devices, and the control function is limited to switching them on and off.
Each device connects to the ModuLab XM system using a pair of wires, and a
switch on the potentiostat opens or closes the circuit.
The control outputs are available from either one or two 25-pin D-type connectors
on the rear panel of the ModuLab XM chassis. Each connector contains the
outputs for 4 slots, so there is one connector on a 4-slot chassis and two
connectors on an 8-slot chassis. Each external device has to be connected to two
pins on one of these sockets. The pin positions are shown in Figure 4-3 and the
pin numbers for the three control outputs on each slot are given in Table 4-2. On
each socket pin 13 is not connected, and all other pins connect to the pair of wires
for each device.
