8. Theory of Operation
8.3 Tape Application Monitor (TAM)
Operation (Optional)
To turn the Tape Monitoring System On/Off ,
a TAM switch is located inside the Electrical Box.
Note: Only allow qualifi ed electrical
personnel perform this function.
Important: Before turning TAM On/Off , turn
off air pressure and electrical supplies.
A Tape Application Monitor (TAM) provides
a visual indication of faults that can occur
during the tape application process.
These visually indicated faults include:
- improper tape application
- no tape applied
- broken or incomplete tape application
- tape was not cut at end of taping cycle
The Tape Application Monitor (TAM) will
indicate the type of fault by a predesignated
light beacon color (See Chart). The machine
will stop operating when a fault is indicated
(except with a low tape signal). TAM opera-
tions are controlled by information received
in the Programmable Logic Control (PLC)
from Five (5) sensors (Figure 8-13):
1) Box Present
2) Lower Tape Retract/Cut-Off (Position b)
3) Upper Tape Retract/Cut-Off (Position c)
4) Tape Dispensing
5) Low Tape Sensor
Note: There are 7 Sensors if both Upper and
Lower Taping Heads are monitored.
Three (3) of these Sensors (Box Present
and Upper/Lower Blade Retract/Cut-Off )
are located on the machine bed (Figure 8-14).
These sensors are responsible for standard
machine control functions and are used in
conjuction with the optional Tape Applica-
tion Monitor (TAM) system (if installed).
The Box Present Sensor (a) signals the
presence of a box and the start of taping
cycle. Lower Blade Retract Sensor (b)
signals the end of the lower tape cycle and
the Upper Blade Retract Sensor (c) signals
the end of the upper tape cycle (and end of
the tape dispensing operation - see Sensor
Positions in Figure 8-13 and 8-14). When
tape is dispensed to the point where the roll
no longer blocks the sensor, an indicator
light is illuminated on the Beacon Signal Light
(see Box Position in Figure 8-14).
