The black and white image - BW

The B/W image obtained with the scan represents the dif-
ferent objects of the baggage or freight item in different
brightness levels (grey levels) ranging from white to
black. The brightness corresponds to the current absorp-
tion characteristics of the scanned objects:
– objects of high absorption are represented in dark col-
or or black. These are either objects of higher density
(e.g. steel, lead) or objects of lower density but higher
thickness.
– objects of low absorption appear in bright color or
white. These are objects of lower density and thick-
ness (e.g. paper, textiles),
 In an X-ray unit without separate b/w monitor, you ob-
tain the b/w image with
to function BW.

The HI-MAT
system* - the basic material detection*
Contrary to the b/w image, in addition to the different
brightness levels, the HI-MAT
the material composition of the objects contained in the
scanned item by coloring with three different basic colors
and varying shades.
I
The image display is improved by a real-time
sharpening filter.
The materials an object is composed of are assigned to
three groups according to the effective atomic weight of
the chemical elements contained; the three groups are
represented in orange, green and blue. This assignment is
effected on the basis of a real time calculation from the
degrees of absorption measured depending on the radiation hardness.
The effective atomic number Z
als. If different materials are overlapping in a baggage or freight item, the effective atomic number Z
ults from the mean values of the involved atoms and molecules.
