How to use the automatic detection functions*
I
To ensure that the X-ACT system is functioning without fault, the material detection of the HI-SCAN
X-ray unit must be calibrated monthly by a higher access level user.
 To define the detection class, call up the X-ACT menu*

 Set the detection class by means of the navigator.
 Then leave the menu with

Radioactivity detector*

The integrated radioactivity detector* detects gamma ra-
diation (γ radiation). In the extended version the detection
of neutron radiation is also included*.
If radiation is detected, the respective baggage or freight item is marked by a frame and a suitable symbol is
displayed.
The kind and intensity of radiation are distinguished as follows:

Yellow-black
Radiation warning (see below)

Low-intensity radiation
Red-black frame
Radiation alarm (see below)

Due to the high sensitivity of the integrated radioactivity detector, even very low intensity radiation sources
will be detected.
 To be sure that the detected radiation really comes from the scanned bag or freight item, you should turn
the object round (bottom side on top) and repeat the scanning. If no radiation is detected now, the previ-
ously detected radiation source might have been carried by a passenger. A detection of γ radiation may
also occur if persons who have undergone a medical treatment using radioactive nuclides are near the X-
ray inspection unit.

Due to the high absorption, shielded
containers used for the transport of ra-
diation sources will appear black on the
X-ray image.
