Switch Automation

Provided that the Latching Behaviour for Switch Controls in "Touch" option has been selected In the Pro Tools Setup /
Preferences / Mixing menu, the channel switches follow standard Pro Tools Latch Mode operation as far as automation
is concerned. The initial state of the console switches are saved as the first breakpoint in the switch automation playlists.
Once the Touch Mode has been enabled on a track, any changes in state of the channel switches are saved as additional
breakpoints.
Editing switch automation is via the standard Pro Tools Automation editing tools.
MOTORS OFF
Many engineers prefer not to be distracted by seeing faders moving around in front of them as they play through a mix pass.
They prefer to hear the moves rather than see them. -Control MOTORS OFF mode complies precisely with that
requirement. Enabling MOTORS OFF disengages the motors and leaves the faders as the mix level input device with the
channel high resolution digitally controlled attenuators (DCA) as the active gain element. The channel level bargraphs in the
TFT meter screen also shows the current fader playback level when the SSL / Auto menu is active. A mix can be built up
in exactly the same way as when working on a standard VCA based SSL console. With MOTORS OFF, the fader always
remains positioned at the level being written to the track when playback was stopped. Locating back to a point earlier in
the mix and activating Write via the Fader Status switch, either in Play or whilst stopped, writes the actual fader position
into the automation playlist, effectively providing a local individual fader JOIN mode. The global JOIN and REVISE keys
are still active in MOTORS OFF but because the faders always retain their position when the mix pass was stopped they
have the same function.
Trim automation data can also be entered in MOTORS OFF mode with the added benefit of not needing to manually
position the fader at the 0dB point. When a fader is enabled for writing trim moves, the motor is temporarily engaged to
automatically position the fader at 0 dB position, or at the actual trim level if the playlist already contains trim data. After
that the fader can be moved manually to the required trim level which will be indicated in the channel level display above
the fader and write activated via the fader status switch. As the fader always stays at the selected trim value, multiple
operation of the fader status switch are equivalent to the TRIM LOK function in the original AWS automation system.
In the SSL / Misc / Setup menu an option is available to activate fader touch sense in Motors Off Mode. With Touch Sense
Active, touching the fader will initiate the Write function, and if SNAP is also enabled, releasing the fader will initiate an
'AutoMatch' back to the data stored in the playlist but with the fader staying at its last position prior to being released. This
is similar to the IP (immediate pickup) mode that was a feature of the original SSL automation system but without the need
to actually move the fader to start writing automation data.
De-selecting MOTORS OFF repositions all the faders at their underlying channel levels regardless of the current state
of the mix system.
