STARTER
GENERAL
The starter is made up of a field coil assembly, solenoid
assembly and drive assembly.The repair instructions contained
in this section are divided into three major service areas
accordingly.
For troubleshooting and diagnostic information, see the
ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL for this motorcycle.

Wiring Diagrams

The starting circuit wiring diagram contains information about
wiring configuration. For additional information, see the
ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL for this motorcycle.
REMOVAL
1.
Remove seat.
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+)
cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable con-
nected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion,
which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)

Disconnect battery. See

Remove primary cover. See

Remove sprocket cover. See
A ball hex driver may be required to gain access to the starter
mounting bolts.

Remove protective boot.

Remove positive battery cable (2).

Detach solenoid wire (3).

DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION, AND REPAIR
1.

5-3. Lift rubber boot (1). Remove field wire nut
with washer (2) (metric) to detach field wire (3).

5-4. Remove both through-bolts (1, 3).

Remove both end cover screws with o-rings (2) and end
cover (4).

5-5. Use a wire hook to pull upward on brush
springs (3), and lift brushes out of brush holder (2).
Remove brush holder.
5.
Check brush length. Replace all four brushes if length of
any one brush is less than 0.433 in. (11.0 mm).
Brushes not available separately. Purchase a new field frame
(1) and brush holder (2) to replace brushes.
6.
Remove armature (4) and field frame (1).
