Removing and installing or replacing
water pump
Drain coolant.
Slip a length of hose (fuel line or similar) over
screw and tool and release the fastener.
Open radiator cap and remove fastener.
Remove magnetic wheel.
Remove circlip and washer (arrow).
Press water pump gear out of fit of needle roller.
Remove needle roller and washer.
Remove screw.

Note:
Working from left side of engine, slide a plastic rod
into the water pipe and use it to remove the pump
shaft.

Caution:
Do not use a metal rod, as it would damage the wa-
ter pump gear.
Remove pump housing.

Caution:
Reinstalling a damaged water-pump shaft can result
in leakage.
Remove O-rings.
Check contact zones of the two sealing rings on
the water pump shaft for tracks, damage and
wear.
Wear values:
Housing inside diameter.......... 10.08 mm (0.397 in)
Check water pump impeller for damage and de-
formation.

Replacing shaft sealing rings

Use a screwdriver to remove sealing rings from
housing.

Note:
Before installing, coat outside of shaft sealing rings
C1110310
with paraffin oil spirit; do not oil.

Caution:
Install shaft sealing rings with flats facing each other.
Use drift, BMW No. 11 7 611, and spacing ring
to install first sealing ring.
Install second sealing ring without spacing ring.

Note:
Make sure that the bore for leak-off water is not ob-
structed.
