Checking valve clearances

(Inspections I, II and III)

For the sake of clarity, these illustrations show the
vehicle with the drive swinging arm removed
– Remove left and right service covers

Open hose clamp (arrow) with pliers,
BMW No. 17 5 500
•
Remove screws (1) securing valve cover
•
Note restrictor (arrow)
•
Remove spark plug
•
Turn engine by turning camshafts until tips of
cam lobes point outwards
•
Measure valve clearance using single feeler
gauges
•
Note down the valve clearances
•
If necessary, replace bucket tappets
