Replacing variator

Removing variator

•
Remove cover.

Variator cover removed.
•
Insert pin, BMW No. 11 7 651, to secure crank-
shaft in TDC position.

Caution:
Make sure that belt and belt pulleys remain free of
oil and grease.
•
Using holder, BMW No. 11 7 521, remove nut
from clutch drum.
•
Remove clutch drum, using a puller if necessary.

To relieve tension on belt, turn outer plate (arrow)
of driven variator counter-clockwise by hand,
while pressing it against inner plate.

The purpose is to move belt onto small-diameter
wheel and hold the two plates apart.

Remove driven variator with belt from variator
shaft and lift clear of driven variator.
