Polling Parameters

Four parameters control the polling process for multiplexers. They are summarized in Table 1-2.
Parameter Name
Poll Group Size
Poll Interval
Poll Response Time
Poll Attempts
The Poll Group Size and Poll Interval parameters provide control over how much polling traffic
will be generated to and from the network. For example, consider an ACCULINK network
consisting of 40 nodes. If the Poll Group Size parameter is set to 5 and the Poll Interval parameter
is set to 10, then the 6800 Series NMS will poll five nodes every 10 seconds. Nodes are polled in
ascending address order (that is, the first five nodes will be polled first, then the next five nodes,
and so on until all nodes have been polled). The process then cycles back to the first group of
nodes again. Generally, the Poll Interval parameter should be at least double the Poll Group Size.
The Poll Response Time and Poll Attempts parameters provide some control over the length of
time before the 6800 Series NMS will report a ''No Response" alarm for an unresponsive node.
Multiply the two parameters to determine the minimum amount of time before the alarm is
reported. The actual time may be somewhat longer since you must also factor in the time interval
between polls of the same node.
The Minimum Value and Maximum Value columns in Table 1-2 specify the smallest and largest
values to which each parameter may be set.

Table 1-2
Polling Parameters
Description
Specifies the maximum number of nodes to be
polled concurrently for alarm information. The
default value is 5.
Specifies the time interval (in seconds)
between poll requests to one group of nodes
and the next. The default value is 10
Specifies the maximum time (in seconds) to
wait for a node to respond to a poll request.
The default value is 30.
Specifies the number of consecutive times a
node must not answer a poll request before a
''No Response" alarm is generated. The
default value is 2.
For reference, previous releases of NMS used the following values
for these parameters:
Poll Group Size 10
Poll Interval 19
Poll Response Time 10
Poll Attempts 1
