COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System

Polling

Alarms from devices in the network are automatically reported to the 6800 Series NMS via the
polling process. The 6800 Series NMS polling process consists of two steps. First, the NMS
establishes a poll list of the local control modems, DSUs, and Shared Diagnostic Units (SDUs)
through entries in the device profiles of these local control devices or via the Acquire Modem
Control Channel Poll List (acmccpl) command. Thereafter, the NMS continuously polls each local
control device on its poll list. For a discussion of NMS poll lists, refer to COMSPHERE 6800
Series Network Management System User's/System Administrator's Guide.
Each control modem and DSU must then establish a poll list of its tributary devices. Tributary
devices must then establish a poll list of extended control devices. You can cause a device to
establish its poll list by executing the Acquire Poll List (acpl) or Change Poll List (chpl) command.
Also, in the case of DATAPHONE II DDD devices, each local SDU must establish a poll list of its
DDD modems. After a poll list is established, the control modem, DSU, and SDU poll each device
on its poll list. When alerts are detected by the polling of these control devices, they are reported
back to the NMS when the local control devices are polled.
To establish a modem, DSU, or SDU poll list, execute the following commands:
Acquire Poll List (acpl)
Change Poll List (chpl)
Refer to the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System Communications Products
Support Command Reference Manual for additional information on these commands.
1-6
This command directs a control modem or DSU to compile a poll list automatically by
polling all allowable addresses one diagnostic level below it. A device is added to the poll
list when it responds to the poll. This command is also used to establish an SDU poll list
by polling the SDU's serving dataset slots to determine if a DDD modem is present. If a
DDD modem responds, it is added to the SDU poll list.
Each device on the poll list has a unique address based upon its location within the
network. Refer to Appendix D of the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management
System User's/System Administrator's Guide for more detailed information on device
addressing.
This command allows you to add or delete a device manually from a control modem's or
DSU's poll list, or to change a device's polling status from active to inactive so that it is
skipped during the polling process. This command also allows you to perform the same
task with each local SDU and its DDD modems. You can use this command to add a
limited number of devices to a poll list, or to otherwise update an existing poll list.
