Installing Upgrades
Math Coprocessor Installation
A math coprocessor can be installed on the NEATsx to speed
up calculation intensive operations. To do this, follow the standard
chip installation procedures outlined earlier. The main difference lies
in the means by which the correct orientation is determined.
The 80387sx is a square chip that does not have the notch
common to RAM chips. The Pin 1 position of the chip is indicated by
a dot on the surface and that comer is also slightly cut off. This comer
should be aligned with the notched comer printed on the board. The
socket has a beveled edge at this comer.
The NEATsx 80387sx socket is a box-like component into
which the 80387sx chip is pressed. The inside of each edge of the box
has a row of pins. When purchasing an 80387sx chip make certain that
it will mount in this type of socket rather than having pins on its
underside.
The figure on the next page illustrates the points above.
