Starting System
Starter Test (cont'd)
Check lor Wear and Damage
T h e s t a r t e r s h o u l d c r a n k t h e e n g i n e s m o o t h l y a n d
s t e a d i l y , l f t h e s t a r t e r e n g a g e s , b u t c r a n k s t h e e n g i n e
erratically, remove it, and inspect the starter drive gear
and torque converter or flywheel ring gear for damage.
. Check the drive gear overrunning clutch for binding
o r s l i p p i n g w h e n t h e a r m a t u r e i s r o t a t e d w i t h t h e
d r i v e g e a r h e l d .

lf damaged, replace the gears.
Check Cranking Voltage and Current Draw
C r a n k i n g v o l t a g e s h o u l d b e n o l e s s t h a n 8 . 5 v o l t s .
Current draw should be no more than 350 amperes.
lf cranking voltage is too low, or current draw too high,
check for:
. dead or low battery.
. o p e n c i r c u i t i n s t a r t e r a r m a t u r e c o m m u t a t o r s e g ,
menrs.
. staner armature draggtng.
. shoned armature winding.
o excessive drag in engine.
Check Cranking rpm
E n g i n e s p e e d d u r i n g c r a n k i n g s h o u l d b e a b o v e 1 0 0 r p m .
lf speed is too low, check for:
a loose banery or starter terminals.
a excessively worn starter brushes.
. open circuit in commutator segments.
. d i n y o r d a m a g e d h e l i c a l s p l i n e o r d r i v e g e a r .
. defective drive gear overrunning clutch.
Check Starter Disengagement
With the shift lever in S or E position (A,/T) or with the
clutch pedal depressed (Mff), rurn the ignition switch to
S T A R T ( l l l ) , a n d r e l e a s e t o O N ( l l ) .
The starter drive gear should disengage from the torque
converter or flywheel ring gear when you release the
key.
lf the drive gear hangs up on the torque convener or fly
wheel ring gear, check for:
. solenoid plunger and switch malfunction.
. d i r t y d r i v e g e a r a s s e m b l y o r d a m a g e d o v e r r u n n i n g
c l u t c h .

Starter Solenoid Test
1. Check the hold-in coil for continuity between the S
t e r m i n a l a n d t h e a r m a t u r e h o u s i n g ( g r o u n d ) . T h e
coll is OK if there is contjnuity.

Check the pull-in coil tor continuity between the S
and M terminals. The coil is OK if there is continuitv.
