Rear Window Defogger
Function Test
CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or damage the detog-
ger wires with the tester probe.
1. Check for voltage between the positive terminal and
body ground with the ignition switch and defogger
switch ON.

. lf there is no voltage, check for:
- fau lty defogger relay.
- faulty defogger switch.

lf there is battery voltage, go to step 2.
NEGATIVE TERMINAL
POSITIVE TERMINAL
Check for continuity between the negative terminal
a n d b o d y g r o u n d .
l f t h e r e i s n o c o n t i n u i t y , c h e c k f o r a n o p e n i n t h e
defogger g round wire.
Touch the voltmeter positive probe to the halfway
point of each defogger wire, and the negative probe
t o t h e n e g a t i v e t e r m i n a l .
There should be approximately 6 V with the ignition
switch and the deiogger switch ON.
lJ the voltage is as specified, the defogger wire is
oK.
lf the voltage is not as specified, repair the defog
g e r w i r e .
lf it is more than 6 V, there is a break in the
negative half of the wire.

Defogger Wire Repair
NOTE: To make an effective repair, the broken section
m u s t b e n o l o n g e r t h a n o n e i n c h .
1. Lightly rub the area around the broken section with
fine steel wool, then clean it with alcohol.
2.
Carclully mask above and below the broken portion
of the defogger wire with cellophane tape.

U s i n g a s m a l l b r u s h , a p p l y a h e a v y c o a t o f s i l v e r
c o n d u c t i v e p a i n t e x t e n d i n g a b o u t 1 / g , , o n b o t h
sides of the break. Allow 30 minutes to dry.
NOTE: Thoroughly mix the paint before use.
4 . Check for continuity in the repaired wire.
Apply a second coat of paint in the same way. Let it
dry three hours before removing the tape.
