EXCESSIVE
EXHAUST
SMOKE

POSSIBLE CAUSES
1. Engine operating too cold
(white smoke).
2. Improper starting procedure
(white smoke).
3. Fuel supply inadequate.
4. Injection pump timing.
5. inadequate intake air.
6. Air leak between turbocharger
and intake manifold.
7. Exhaust leak at the manifold
or turbocharger.
8. Improperly
turbocharger.
9. Improperly
injectors.
10. Improperly operating or over
fueled injector pump.
11. Piston rings not sealing (blue
smoke).
CORRECTION
1. Refer to troubleshooting for
coolant temperature below
normal
System). Inspect glow plugs
for proper operation.
2. Use
procedures.
3. Check fuel supply pressure
and inlet restriction.
4. Scan/Check pump timing.
5. Inspect/change air filter. Look
for other restriction. Check
charge
operating
obstructions.
6. Check/correct leaks in the air
operating
crossover
gaskets, mounting capscrews
or through holes in the
manifold cover.
7. Check/correct leaks in the
manifold
gaskets. If cracked replace
manifold.
8. Inspect/replace turbocharger.
9. Check
inoperative injectors.
10. Repair or replace injection
pump.
11. Perform
blow-by check. Correct as
required.
EDI DIAGNOSIS

starting

cooler
for
tube.

or
turbocharger
and
replace
compression
