3.4.13. Selecting the Generator Drop Frame Mode (NTSC only)

In the NTSC (525 line) video standard, the frame rate of approximately 29.97 frames per second
causes an error between real time and 'colour time'. To overcome this problem, the drop frame mode
was created. This mode compensates for the approximate 4 minute per day error by dropping the first
two frame counts (0, 1) at the start of each minutes, except minutes 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. A drop
frame flag bit is set in the code when the drop frame format is used. When the 8010TM-IRIG is
operating in the NTSC (525 line) video standard, the generator may be programmed to operate in either
the drop frame or non drop frame mode.
OPERATION
Model 8010TM-IRIG SDI Time Code Master with IRIG Reader Manual
The GEN IRIG LINE menu item is used to select the line on which the
IRIG encoded VITC will be inserted. The 8010TM-IRIG keeps track of
the lines for both the 525 and 625 video standards, you will have to set
the line number separately for each video standard.
When the GEN IRIG LINE sub menu is first selected, the current
number will be shown. Press the left and right (
line number. The user will have to determine by experience the most
suitable line for recording VITC according to the following criteria.
In order to protect the VITC reading process against dropouts, the VITC
is usually repeated on 2 non-adjacent lines of the video signal, not
earlier than line 10 (6 for PAL) or later than line 32. The user should
choose the line numbers so that the SMPTE VITC line and the IRIG
VITC line are on non-adjacent line numbers. For certain recordings,
the use of some of these lines may interfere with other signals inserted
into the vertical interval.
