ILMI Management
Information Base
(MIB)
ATM Interface
Management Entity
(IME)
The ILMI functions for an ATM interface provide status, configuration,
statistics, and control information about physical and ATM layer
parameters of the ATM interface. In addition, it provides for address
registration across the UNI. ILMI communications use SNMP directly over
the AAL5.
The ILMI consists of the following components which reside in each ATM
interface of an ATM device participating in the UNI.
ILMI MIB — A management database which includes the ATM
interface ILMI attributes
IME — Management software that executes the ILMI functions
ILMI functions
Information about managed objects is stored in a virtual information
store termed the Management Information Base (database) (MIB). Each
object defined in the MIB has a name, a syntax, and an encoding. The
UNI ILMI objects are organized in a standard MIB structure; there is one
UNI ILMI MIB structure instance for each side of the UNI side.
The following types of management information are stored in the ILMI
ATM UNI MIB:
Physical layer information
ATM layer information
Virtual path (VP) connections information
Virtual channel (VC) connections information
Network prefix and ATM address registration information
Service registry
For each ATM device participating in a UNI, a ATM Interface Management
Entity (IME) supports the ILMI functions for that UNI. When two ATM
devices are connected across a point-to-point ATM interface, two IMEs
are associated with that ATM interface, one for each ATM device. They
are called adjacent IMEs.
An IME can access the ATM interface MIB information in the adjacent IME
via the ILMI communications protocol.
