register all LAN destinations for which it is responsible, or join as a proxy
to other MAC addresses.
Address resolution is the procedure by which a LEC associates a LAN
destination with the ATM address of another LEC or the BUS. Address
resolution allows clients to set up data direct VCCs to carry frames (refer
to Figure 49).
Figure 49 Address Resolution
In Switched Virtual Connection (SVC) environments, the LANE servers
(LEC, LES and BUS) set up connections between each other using UNI
signaling.
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch supports the LAN Emulation
Services LES, BUS and LECS. It utilizes Interim Local Management
Interface (ILMI) for initial address registration of the devices in the switch
and signaling for setup connections.
On booting up, the CoreBuilder 7000 ATM switch automatically sets all
ELAN LES addresses to 13 bytes switch prefix, 6 bytes switch MAC
address and a 1 byte selector signifying the ELAN of the LES (0-f). The
BUS address within the CoreBuilder 7000 is identical to the LES address
for the corresponding ELAN.
Each ELAN is assigned an ELAN type and frame size which corresponds to
the type of LAN that the ELAN is emulating: 802.3 Ethernet type, Fast
Ethernet, 802.5 Token Ring, or FDDI. The default is 802.3 Ethernet type.
