The electrical and mechanical systems of your System Electric Hand are not water-resistant. You must
prevent water from entering the Electric Hand. You may wash the Electric Hand, do the dishes, and similar
activities only when wearing a prosthetic glove free of tears and punctures. Be careful not to let water run
over the top of the glove and enter the hand mechanism. If water enters the inside of the Hand for any
reason, please contact your prosthetist immediately to avoid further damage.
Attention!
Driving Vehicles
An upper extremity amputee's ability to drive a vehicle is determined on a case-by-case basis. Factors include
the type of fitting (amputation level, unilateral or bilateral, residual limb conditions, design of the prosthesis)
and the amputee's abilities. All persons are required to observe their country's national and state driving
laws when operating vehicles. For insurance purposes, drivers should have their driving ability examined
and approved by an authorised test center. For maximum safety and convenience, Ottobock recommends
that, at the very least, a specialist evaluate the need for any adaptations to the car (such as by installing a
steering fork). It is indispensable that the car can be driven safely with the Hand turned OFF. Driving with
the Electric Hand turned ON may present a risk if the Hand inadvertently opens due to unintentional muscle
contraction or other causes.
CAUTION!
Before a terminal device with a quick-disconnect wrist can be used, the terminal device must be positioned
in such a way that a slight turn of it cannot disconnect the terminal device from the prosthesis.
1 Instructions for use
1.1 Hand switch
Your System Electric Hand has an inconspicuous on/off switch inside the inner hand.
System Electric Hand, sizes 7¼, 7¾, 8¼
To turn on the Hand, press the switch on the back of the Hand (Fig. 1).
To turn off the Hand, press the switch in the thumb region (Fig. 2).
System Electric Hand, size 7 (Fig. 1)
Transcarpal hand (Fig. 3)
To turn the Hand on and off, press the button on the back of the Hand. To prevent inadvertent activation or
deactivation, the ON/OFF button must be held down for approx. 1 second to turn the prosthesis on or off.
Turn the Hand off whenever you would like to maintain a certain hand position for an extended period of time,
such as while carrying a bag, holding silverware, while writing or during longer periods of passive use, e.g.
air or train journey, visit to a theater or cinema.
Turning the Hand off prevents unintentional opening of the Hand due to accidental muscle tension or electrical
interference. It also extends battery life.
The hand switch can be pressed easily with the other hand, as well as on a table edge or against your leg.
1.2 Quick-disconnect wrist
The quick-disconnect wrist allows a quick change from the System Electric Hand to a System Electric Greifer
and vice versa.
If your System Electric Hand is supplied with a quick-disconnect wrist (allowing passive pronation and supi-
nation) you can rotate it to a better position by turning the Hand. This makes it easier to grasp many objects.
You can also easily separate the Hand from the socket (to replace it with a System Electric Greifer) by rotating
the Hand in either direction (approx. 360°) until you feel slight resistance (Fig. 4). Once you overcome the
resistance, the Hand will disconnect from the wrist.
