8.1.2
Coverage Patterns
Placement of microphones must be planned to ensure coverage of all required areas and to avoid
over-coverage. The external and internal microphones:
Have a horizontal coverage area (-3 dB) of 130º, centered around the front of the
microphone;
Have a vertical coverage angle of 45 degrees from the front of the microphone area;
Coverage area extends approximately 3m from the front of the microphone;
Should be installed in front of and above the area to be monitored. Microphones can also
be installed in front of and below the area to be monitored, depending on the physical
configuration of the area.
When planning for the installation of microphones consider the following:
All areas are monitored and have adequate coverage;
Individual microphones should be separated by a minimum of 4m to ensure there is no
overlapping coverage. Overlapping coverage can make it hard to determine the source
location when playing back recorded audio.
NOTE: Exterior microphones must be protected from direct exposure to sea
spray and precipitation.
