1.1.7.2
Float-Free Capsule
A float-free capsule is a combined FRM and Cospas-Sarsat EPIRB (Emergency Positioning
Indicating Radio Beacon). Several models are approved for use with the VDR-100G3. Each
capsule contains a memory module to record 12 hours of data. If a ship sinks, the capsule floats
free and transmits both its position and MMSI for at least 7 days.
The interface between the VDR-100G3 and the memory capsule is a standard 10/100 Base-T
Ethernet connection using TCP/IP standard protocol.
Power for the capsule is provided depending on the make of the capsule.
(See Chapter 12 for full FRM/SFRM details.)
1.1.8
Remote Storage Module (RSM)
The Remote Storage Module (RSM) is an optional removable data storage device which
provides the ability to retrieve copies of recorded data.
The optional RSM uses the USB port located in the front panel of the DPU and is available to
customers requiring additional capacity for data retrieval.
The module has an AC adaptor and a USB 2.0 port which allows the stored data to be retrieved
and/or reviewed on a PC equipped with a USB 2.0 port.
1.1.9
External Data Interfaces
The External Data Interfaces convert data signals from ship's equipment to IEC 61162 (NMEA
0183) compliant data sentences. These are recorded via the NMEA Module described in Section
1.1.5.3
NOTE: See Appendix 6 – External Interface Modules for further details.
