1. Check:
• Swingarm pivot shaft bearings
Refer to "SWINGARM AND REAR SHOCK
ABSORBER ASSEMBLIES" on page 4-65.

CHECKING THE DRIVE BELT

1. Remove:
• Drive belt upper guard and lower guard
Refer to "REAR WHEEL" on page 4-16.
2. Check:
• Drive belt
External tooth cracks "A" → Replace.
Missing teeth "B" → Replace.
Hook wear "C" → Replace.
Stone damage "D" → Replace if damage is
on the edge.
Internal tooth cracks (hairline) "E" → OK to
run, but monitor condition.
Chipping (not serious) "F" → OK to run, but
monitor condition.
Fuzzy edge cord "G" → OK to run, but moni-
tor condition
Bevel wear (outboard edge only) "H" → OK to
run, but monitor condition.
Refer to "BELT DRIVE" on page 4-70

ADJUSTING THE DRIVE BELT SLACK

TIP
The drive belt slack must be checked at the tight-
est point on the belt.

NOTICE
A drive belt that is too tight will overload the
engine and other vital parts, and one that is
too loose can skip and damage the swing-
arm or cause an accident. Therefore, keep
the drive belt slack within the specified lim-
its.
TIP
Measure the drive belt slack when the engine is
cold, and when the drive belt is dry.
1. Stand the vehicle on a level surface.

WARNING
Securely support the vehicle so that there is
no danger of it falling over.
TIP
Place the vehicle on the sidestand or on a suit-
able stand so that the rear wheel is elevated.
