ONITORING THE ETWORK
To enable the 3WXM service to monitor network data, you or the 3WXM
service administrator must specify the WX switches to monitor. The
3WXM service collects data from the switches and updates the
information in the views under the Monitor tool bar option for 3WXM
clients.
To specify the WX switches to monitor, upload their configuration into
3WXM or add them to the network plan. In addition, enable SNMP traps
on the WX switches.
By default, the 3WXM service supplies data to all of the views under the
Monitor tool bar option. This data is refreshed at regular intervals,
according to the polling interval configured for the 3WXM service. The
default polling interval is 5 minutes.
You can optionally disable the 3WXM service from supplying data to
specified views. To configure the 3WXM service for monitoring, see
"Changing Monitoring Settings" on page 510. To enable SNMP traps on
WX switches, see "Configuring SNMP" on page 196.
There are different types of networks, and the requirements and
expectations for network monitoring change depending on the type of
network being monitored. The two most commons network types are
corporate or campus networks, and distributed networks with remote
sites.
Corporate or Campus Networks
Corporate or campus networks have 2 to 32 high-capacity switches, such
as WX-4400 devices. These networks can include a high number of APs
and clients in a variety of locations, including multiple sites managed by a
single 3WXM server. One or more mobility domains can be configured
for this network.
For this network, 3WXM has sufficient bandwidth to periodically collect
detailed information from all of the switches. With SNMP traps and all
trending options enabled, 3WXM will automatically collect data and
provide network wide reports on demand. 3WXM will immediately notify
the administrator with status and fault information, and the administrator
can retrieve data at any time from a single switch or across the network.
