Management Options

A word about Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP)
In addition to permitting changes to the Compaq Storage Hub 12 hub's
password as well as configuring the Compaq Storage Hub 12 Diagnostic Tools
(see the section " Obtaining Hub Information," later in this chapter), the
Management Options Menu supports changing parameters tied to SNMP
information access and delivery. The first group of parameters deals with
SNMP Community Names. There are several parameters that can be set or
changed in the SNMP Community Name strings. The Community Names
define the security characteristics that exist between an agent and a set of
SNMP managers.
The concept is defined at the agent in the hub. The agent establishes one
community for each desired combination of authentication, access control, and
other characteristics. Every defined Community Name can provide a unique
view of management information in the Management Information Base (MIB)
by determining the subset of information that may be accessed. The
Community Name functions as a minimal security checkpoint much like a
password, but unlike a password, it is not encrypted when it is sent over the
network. ICI devices ship with Community Name default values for SNMP get
(read), set (write), and trap operations. The default strings are listed in the
table below. Since the defaults listed are well-known, it is desirable to change
them for security reasons.

set Community Name
trap Community Name
IMPORTANT: The Compaq Storage Hub 12 Community Names that can be changed via
this menu are case-sensitive and are limited to 15 characters.
In addition, the name used to describe the MIB can be changed. The MIB-2
sysName -2 sysName string is used to describe the Compaq Storage Hub 12
hub on a network management platform such as HP OpenView for Windows
NT.
