Proxy Master

The proxy master is a managed device that connects the two sections of the
managed network – the Ethernet part with the Fibre Channel part. The proxy
master accomplishes the following tasks:
The proxy master relays the communications from the Hub 12
Management Utilities to the individual devices on the Fibre Channel
network. To do this, the proxy master must have an Ethernet connection.
However, the proxy master communication can not occur through an
Ethernet connection alone.
The proxy master turns on numerous management features within the
system (once it is properly configured internally). One of the most
important management features is the MIB, the repository of
information about the current status of the entire network. The proxy
master automatically polls other managed devices to determine their
current status.
The proxy master relays commands issued by the network administrator.
The Compaq Storage Hub 1 Fibre Channel Hub with the Hub 12 Management
Module installed is the device that acts as the proxy master. When properly
configured, it routinely collects data from all the slave-managed devices
connected to it by Fibre Channel by using the Compaq Inter-Hub
Communication Interface (ICI). The ICI runs over the Fibre Channel cables
but uses its own logical channel not used by the standard protocol (out-of-band
communications) without affecting the overall performance of the system.
