The HMM is shipped with the subnet mask set to 0.0.0.0. While this is a legal
subnet mask, it may not work at your company. (As noted above, there is a
brief tutorial about IP addresses and subnet masks on our web site.) If in doubt
or if you are having unexplained ethernet networking problems, check with the
network administrator. If you need to change this parameter, enter 3 Select
Subnetworking Mask from the Network Setup Menu. The menu is shown in
the figure below. Enter the appropriate subnet mask for your network segment.
NOTE: The most common type of IP network is a Class C network. These start with the
first number in the IP address in the range of 192 to 223. For example, a number like
197.134.34.98 is a Class C network. It will usually be a Class C subnet mask. This is
255.255.255.0, and we show how to set this mask in the example below. However, there
are many cases where this is not the correct subnet mask, so check with the network
administrator.
