About HMU.dat

The topological data for a HMU session is stored in an archive file found on
the default path, "C:\Program Files\Compaq\HMU\HMU.dat", or at an
alternative path if one was entered during installation. The IP address for the
proxy management agent for each loop and the user-entered data for
unmanaged devices are always written to this file whenever HMU is shut
down, or when the Save Topological Data command is selected. When HMU
is started the next time, this data is retrieved from the
discovery can be performed automatically on each IP address in the file. Once
all loops have been discovered, the unmanaged devices for the loops are added
to the views.
NOTE: Keep the HMU.dat file backed up if more than one loop is being managed in the
event unmanaged devices are added to a hub. Data can be saved at any time.

Understanding Port Relationships

The relationship between the ports in HMU is an essential part of the
configuration process. The following sections detail the proper way to
configure the ports.
Inter-Hub Communication Interface (ICI) ID
Numbers
As explained in Appendix A (see the "Simple Network Management Protocol"
section), while HMU may communicate with the proxy master through SNMP
over Ethernet, the proxy master communicates with its slave-managed devices
using the Compaq ICI communications protocol. As a result, the various
devices are assigned an ICI ID number. You can view these numbers on each
individual managed device by looking at the Device View "System ID Tab"
(see Chapter 3, "Managing from Device View" for specific information about
device view activities).
The device agent, designated as the HMU management agent, is assigned an
ICI ID1. The first managed slave added to the network is numbered ICI ID2
and the next managed slave is assigned ICI ID3. These numbers are
sequentially assigned as managed devices are added.
