There are three Polling parameters that can be set for the current SAN from
this window. If more than one SAN is being monitored, parameters can be set
globally. The following parameters will be set only on the selected SAN:
Polling Rate - The polling rate establishes how frequently HMU poll
sthe network for status. The default is 0.5 or half a second. The Poll
Rate should be in the range of 500ms-1 hour.
Timeout Period – If there is no response when HMU issues a request to
a managed device, it waits for a specified number of milliseconds and
then retries for a specified number of times before reporting a lack of
connection. The default is 20,000 (20 seconds). The Timeout should be
in the range of 5,000-30,000ms.
Retry Count: This is the number of retries mentioned above. The
default is 3. The Number of Retries should be in the range 2-10.
The last two parameters together affect the duration of the Discovery process
that occurs whenever you start HMU. In a very large network, which might
take more than a minute or longer to discover, it may be best to increase one or
both of the Timeout Period and Retry Count parameters.

Trap Management Station IP Address

Part of the SNMP protocol permits devices to send emergency information
between polling cycles. If the device is a slave managed device, the
information is directed to the proxy master, which in turn issues a trap (a kind
of interrupt). These are sent to the Trap Management station(s) which are
identified by their IP address. There many be more than one, but generally the
IP address of any computer system that normally runs HMU should be listed.
This part of the window allows you to add or delete individual IP addresses, or
to delete the entire list.

Diagnostic Tools

The final tab on the Network Properties is the Diagnostic Tools tab shown in
Figure 2-10. This permits SNMP parameters to be configured as well as to set
up both the Loop Initialization Diagnostic and the Broadcast Storm
Diagnostic.
