Testing the Battery (Open Circuit Test)

Battery Test Table
Voltage Measured
12.68 V (or higher)
12.45 V
12.24 V
12.06 V
11.89 V
Measure the voltage between the battery terminals.
Tools required: Digital multimeter to set the DC volts.
1. The battery temperature should be 16°C to 38°C (60°F to 100°F).
2. Ensure that the key is in the O
off.
3. Connect the positive (+) meter lead to the positive battery post and negative
(-) meter lead to the negative battery post.
4. Measure and record the battery voltage. Refer to the
(page 5–8)
to determine charge level of the battery.
Note: This test provides a relative condition of the battery. The load testing of the
battery provides additional and more accurate information; refer to
Maintaining, and Testing the Battery (page
