Chapter 6: Installing SFP and SFP+ Transceivers

General Guidelines

74
Here are general installation guidelines for SFP and SFP+ transceivers:
SFP and SFP+ transceivers are hot-swappable. You may install
them while the chassis is powered on.
Slots 1 to 24 support 100Base and 1000Base transceivers.
Slots 25 and 26 support 1000Base and 10GBase transceivers and
direct connect TwinAx cables.
Slots S1/27 and S2/28 support 1000Base and 10GBase
transceivers and direct connect TwinAx cables when VCStack is
disabled.
Slots S1/27 and S2/28 support 10GBase transceivers and direct
connect TwinAx cables when VCStack is enabled.
Your Allied Telesis sales representative can provide you with a list
of supported transceivers. For a list of supported types of
transceivers, refer to "Feature Overview" on page 18.
The operational specifications and fiber optic cable requirements
of the transceivers are provided in the documents included with the
devices.
You should install a transceiver before connecting the fiber optic
cable.
Fiber optic transceivers are dust sensitive. Always keep the plug in
the optical bores when a fiber optic cable is not installed, or when
you store the transceiver. When you do remove the plug, keep it
for future use.
Unnecessary removal and insertion of a transceiver can lead to
premature failure.
Caution
A transceiver can be damaged by static electricity. Be sure to
observe all standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions,
such as wearing an antistatic wrist strap, to avoid damaging the
device.
Note
SFP+ slots 27 and 28 are initially configured as stacking slots for the
VCStack feature. To use the switch as a stand-alone unit, disable
the VCStack feature before using the slots. For instructions on how
to disable VCStack, see "Disabling VCStack" on page 83.
