Wearing seat belts
G
Risk of injury
If you do not wear your seat belt correctly, or
if you do not engage your seat belt in the
buckle correctly, it cannot perform its in-
tended protective function. You could then
be seriously or even fatally injured.
For this reason, make sure that all occu-
pants – in particular, pregnant women –
wear their seat belts correctly at all times.
The seat belt must pass closely over
your body and must not be twisted. You
should therefore avoid wearing bulky
clothing (e.g. a winter coat). The shoul-
der belt section of the seat belt must
be routed across the middle of your
shoulder – on no account across your
neck or under your arm – and must be
pulled tight against your upper body.
The lap section of the belt must cross
your body as low down as possible at all
times, i.e. across your hip joints and not
across your abdomen. If necessary,
push the belt strap down slightly and
retighten in the roll-up direction.
64
Do not route the seat belt strap over
sharp or fragile objects, especially if
they are on or in your clothing, e.g. spec-
tacles, pens, keys, etc. The belt strap
could be damaged and it could tear in an
accident and you or other vehicle occu-
pants could be injured.
Only one person should use each seat
belt at any one time. Never carry chil-
dren on an occupant's lap as they can-
not be properly restrained in the event
of an accident, heavy braking or sudden
change in direction and the child and
other occupants could be seriously or
even fatally injured.
Persons less than 1.50 m tall cannot
wear the seat belts properly. They there-
fore require suitable restraint systems.
nur für internen Gebrauch
Children less than 1.50 m tall and under
12 years of age cannot wear the seat
belts correctly. They should therefore al-
ways be secured in suitable child re-
straint systems on a suitable seat in the
vehicle ( page 38). Observe the instal-
lation instructions issued by the manu-
facturer of the child restraint system.
Never use a seat belt to secure both a
person and objects at the same time.
G
Risk of injury
The seat belt only provides the intended lev-
el of protection if the backrest is almost ver-
tical and the occupant is sitting upright.
Avoid seat positions which do not allow a
seat belt to be routed correctly. For further
information, please refer to the index entry
"Seats". For this reason, position the back-
rests as close to the vertical as possible.
Never drive with the backrest reclined too
far back. You could otherwise be seriously
or fatally injured in the event of an accident
or sudden braking.
