Notes on trailer towing
G
Risk of accident
Make sure that no one is present between
the trailer and the vehicle when the vehicle
is being reversed up to the trailer.
Couple and uncouple the trailer carefully. If
you couple the trailer to the towing vehicle
incorrectly, the trailer may break away.
Make sure that the following limits have not
been exceeded:
Permissible trailer drawbar nose weight
Permissible trailer loads
Permissible rear axle load of the towing
vehicle
Permissible gross vehicle weight
The decisive permissible figures that must
not be exceeded can be found in the vehi-
cle's registration documents.
158
Figures that have been generally approved
by the manufacturer can be found on the ve-
hicle identification plate and (for the towing
vehicle) in the "Technical data" section.
You will find details of installation dimen-
sions and loads in the "Technical data"
section ( page 245).
The maximum nose weight of the trailer
tow bar on the ball neck is 140 kg.
However, the nose weight must not exceed
the value given on the vehicle identifica-
tion plate on the trailer and the trailer tow
hitch*. The lowest value applies.
!
If possible, use the maximum permissible
nose weight. However, you should always use a
minimum nose weight of 80 kg, otherwise the
trailer may work loose.
!
Note that the payload and the rear axle load
are reduced by the actual nose weight.

i
On vehicles without level control, the height
of the ball neck changes when the vehicle is
loaded. If necessary, you should use a trailer
with a height-adjustable drawbar.
