Winter driving

Have your vehicle made winterproof at a
qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre, before the
onset of winter. This service includes the
following:
Engine oil change, if the current oil has
not been approved for winter use
The antifreeze/anti-corrosion concen-
tration is checked
A concentrated cleaning agent is add-
ed to the windscreen washer fluid
The battery is checked
Tyre change
Tyres
Use tyres with a tread suitable for driving
on wintry roads. Only then will the maxi-
mum effect of the ABS and EBV driving sys-
tems be achieved in winter.
Use tyres of the same make and tread on
all wheels to maintain safe handling char-
acteristics.
G
Risk of accident
You must replace tyres with a tread depth of
less than 4 mm. They are no longer suitable
for winter use and, more particularly, do not
offer sufficient grip. You could lose control
of the vehicle as a result and cause an acci-
dent.

Winter driving
Always observe the maximum permitted
speed specified for the tyres you have fit-
ted.
If you fit tyres which have a lower maxi-
mum permitted speed than that of the ve-
hicle, affix an appropriate warning sign in
the driver's field of vision. This can be ob-
tained from a qualified specialist work-
shop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service
Centre.
G
Risk of accident
If you fit the spare wheel when driving with
winter tyres, please remember that driving
stability will be impaired owing to unstable
cornering characteristics caused by the dif-
ferent tyres. You should therefore adapt
your style of driving to suit these conditions
and drive carefully.
