Rules for off-road driving
Check that items of luggage and loads
are stowed safely and are well secured
( page 110).
Stop the vehicle and switch the trans-
fer case to LOW if necessary
( page 82) before driving off-road.
Engage the differential locks as neces-
sary ( page 86).
i
ABS is deactivated when the differential
locks are engaged. This allows the front wheels
to be temporarily locked so that they can grip the
loose surface more easily. However, please note
that locked wheels spin and cannot be steered.
Always keep the engine running and in
gear when driving on a downhill gradi-
ent.
150
Drive slowly and evenly, if necessary at
a walking pace.
Ensure that the wheels are in contact
with the ground at all times.
Drive with extreme care on unknown
off-road routes where visibility is poor.
For safety reasons, first get out of the
vehicle and survey the off-road route.
Check the depth of water before ford-
ing.
Look out for obstacles such as rocks,
holes, tree stumps and furrows.
Always keep the side windows closed
during the journey.
Do not stray from marked routes or
paths.

Engine oil level
Check the engine oil level with the dip-
stick and top the engine oil up to the
maximum level if necessary
( page 133).
Only if this is the case is the engine
supplied with sufficient oil if the vehicle
is subjected to sharp inclines on off-
road terrain.
i
However, the engine oil must not be topped
up above the maximum mark, especially if the ve-
hicle is standing at a steep angle, as this could
cause engine damage.
