Data is transmitted on the MPB in the form of 16 bit words. Each MPB message has a header
describing the content and the length. The data itself follows the message header.
Data is said to be broadcast on the bus as the transmitting master card does not know which
other master cards may use the data. A master card may choose to "tune-in" to particular
types of data by placing the header of the desired information in a TUNE RAM. This is used
to "listen" to the MPB and collect data for two receive FIFOs, completely independent of the
operation of the CPU. The CPU then fetches the data from the receive FIFOs Data for output
onto the MPB can be placed into two Transmit FIFOs by the CPU. The FIFOs are assigned with
two out of three priority levels (any 2 from Low, Mean and High). The priority of the data is
used by the ARBITER to gain access to the MPB by bus arbitration. This is performed by all the
master cards connected to the MPB.
Local Cards
The following types of local card are used in the computer module:
CDSPC- VIDEO Color Video Card - This has the pixel video RAM for the color display.
SDN-IF
Serial Distribution Network Interface card - This is used to acquire serial data,
messages and aku-ms from the SDN. Messages and data may also be broadcast
back onto the SDN for use by either bedside monitors, arrhythmia computers,
or other SDN-connected equipment.
RACK-IF
Rack Interface card - This provides the access from the computer module to
the module rack housing the recorder modules.
DSPC-KANJI
Display Language EPROM card - This is an EPROM card that is used to store
the Kanji characters used by the Japanese system, which is too large for the
display controller's on-board ROM.
Card Identifier
All the local cards may be used more than once in the computer module, with the exception of
the SDN-IF. Additionally, more than one local card may be used by a master card. An identifier
