The joint is especially suited for above-knee amputees who require a high degree of stability. The
brake increases the stability of the knee and, for example, compensates for weak musculature.

2.2 Construction and function
The Swing Block (3) is connected to the Upper Joint Section (1) through the Swing Axis (5) and with
the Lower Joint Section (2) through the Knee Axis (4). The slotted Swing Block (3) accepts the slotted
Brake Bushing (15) which surrounds the knee axis. During weight bearing, resistance to movement
between the knee axis and brake bushing increases the stability of the knee.
In the unloaded condition the Compression Spring (9) and the elasticity of the Swing Block (3) re-
lease the brake effect.
Extension of the knee joint is provided by the Extension Assist (20–25). The Extension Assist Cable
(20) runs round the Distal Anchor Shell (21) and is hooked to the Swing Axis (5) (fig. 2) with the end
of the Extension Assist Cable pointing to the rear (fig 3, arrow).
2.3 Service life
INFORMATION
As a basic principle, all Ottobock knee joints are subjected to tests involving three million load
cycles. Depending on the amputee's activity this corresponds to a service life of three to five years.
We recommend carrying out regular safety checks once a year.
