One-touch gearshifting

When the selector lever is in position D you
can perform gearshifts yourself.
i
When driving down long and steep gradi-
ents, you must select shift range 1, 2 or 3 in
good time, especially if the vehicle is laden. You
are then using the braking effect of the engine
and do not have to apply the brakes so much in
order to maintain the speed. This reduces the
strain on the brake system and prevents the
brakes from overheating and wearing too
quickly.
Downshifting
Press the selector lever briefly to the
left towards D–.
The transmission shifts to the next gear
down, depending on the gear currently
selected. Doing this also restricts the
shift range ( page 146).
Risk of accident
Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery surface. The drive
wheels could lose their grip and the vehicle
could skid.
Controls in detail
Automatic transmission
i
If you press the selector lever towards D–
when the speed of the vehicle is too high, the
transmission will not shift down, thus preventing
the engine from overspeeding.
Upshifting
Press the selector lever briefly to the
right towards D+.
The transmission shifts to the next gear
G
up, depending on the gearshift pro-
gram. Doing this also extends the shift
range.
Derestricting the shift range
Press and hold the selector lever to-
wards D+ until
appears once more in
D
the right-hand multi-function display.
The transmission shifts from the cur-
rent shift range directly to D.
