If you treat the engine with sufficient care
from the very start, it will reward you with
excellent performance for a very long time
afterwards. You should therefore observe
the following for the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 km):
Drive at varying road and engine
speeds.
Do not drive faster than 150 mph
(240 km/h).
Also observe the run in instructions for
tires ( page 207).
Try to avoid heavy load on the engine
(driving at full throttle) and driving at
high engine speeds (maximum of
top speed of each gear) during this run-
ning-in period.
Do not drive at engine speeds above
4,500 rpm.
Change gear in good time.
As far as possible, avoid depressing the
accelerator pedal beyond the pressure
point (kickdown).
Do not change down for additional en-
gine braking.
Use ranges 3, 2 or 1 for slow driving
only, for example in mountainous ter-
rain.
After 1,000 miles (1,500 km), you may
gradually bring the vehicle up to full road
and engine speed.
!
The above instructions also apply when driv-
ing the first 1,000 miles (1,500 km) after the en-
2
/
of
gine or the rear-axle differential has been
3
replaced.
The exhaust tips may discolour due to high
temperature of the exhaust system.
