Em ission Control
C ertain system s of the engine
serve to keep the toxic com p o ­
nents of the exhaust gases w ithin
perm issible lim its required by law.
These system s, of course, will
function properly only when
m aintained strictly according to
factory specifications. Any a d ju st­
m ents on the engine should,
therefore, be carried out o nly by
qualified M ercedes-B enz te ch n i­
cians. Engine adjustm ents should
not be altered in any way. M ore­
over, the specified service and
m aintenance job s m ust be carried
out regularly according to
M ercedes-Benz servicing
requirem ents. For details refer to
the M aintenance Booklet.

Inhalation o f exhaust gas is
hazardous to your health. All
exhaust gas contains carbon
m onoxide, and inhaling it can
cause unconsciousness and
lead to death.
Do not run the e n g in e in con ­
fin ed areas (such as a garage)
w hich are not properly ven ti­
lated. If you think that exhaust
gas fum es are entering th e v e ­
hicle w hile driving, have the
cause d eterm in ed and cor­
rected im m ediately. If you
m ust drive under th e s e condi­
tions, drive only w ith at least
o ne w indow fully open.
O n-Board D iagnostic System
(C alifornia m odels only)
The S equential M ultiport Fuel
Injection (SFI) control m odule
m onitors em ission control
com ponents that either provide
inp ut signals to or receive output
signals from the control m odule.
M alfunctions resulting from
interruptions or failure of any of
these com ponents are indicated
by the '' C H EC K E N G IN E " m al­
function indicator lam p in the
instrum ent cluster and are sim ul­
taneously stored in the SFI control
unit.
If the '' C H EC K E N G IN E " m alfunc­
tion indicator lam p com es on,
have the system checked at your
authorized M ercedes-B enz dealer
as soon as possible.
An on-board d ia gn ostic connector
with pushbutton and light em itting
diode (LED) is located on the
engine com partm ent firew all,
allow ing the accurate identification
of system m alfunctions through
the readout of d ia gn ostic trouble
codes.
