The m ost effective occupant re
straint system yet developed for
use in production vehicles is the
seat belt. In som e cases, however,
the protective effect of a seat belt
can be further enhanced by an
airbag.
The d river airbag (1) is located in
the steering wheel hub. The pas
senger airbag (2) is located in the
dashboard ahead of the passen
ger. In co njun ction with w earing
the seat belts w ith em ergency
tensioning retractors (4), they
provide increased protection for
the driver and passenger in
certain m ajor frontal and front
angled im pacts.
The operational readiness of the
airbag system is verified by the
indicator lam p " S R S " (3) in the
instrum ent cluster. If no fault is
detected, the lam p w ill go out after
a pproxim ately 4 seconds; after the
lam p goes out, the system con
tin ue s to m onitor the com ponents
and circu itry of the airbag system
and w ill indicate a m alfunction by
com ing on again.
