W arning!
USE SEA T BELTS PROPERLY.
Each occupant should w ear
th e ir seat belt at all tim es.
T o g ether with the "S R S "
(airbags, ETR 's and knee
bolsters for driver and fro nt
seat passenger), the seat
belt o ffers the best con d i­
tions for protection o f the
body in case of m ajor
frontal impact.
Im properly positioned seat
belts do not provide m axi­
mum protection and may
cause serious injuries in
case of an accident.
N ever w ear the shoulder
belt under your arm , against
your neck or o ff your shoul­
der. In a crash, your body
would m ove too far forw ard.
That would increase the
chan ce of head and neck
injuries. The belt would also
apply too much fo rce to the
ribs, w hich could severely
injure internal organs such
as your liver or spleen.
Position th e lap belt as low
as possible on your hips
and not across the
abdom en. If th e belt is
positioned across your
abdom en, it could cause
serious injuries in a crash.
Each seat belt should never
be used for m ore than one
person at a tim e. Do not
fasten a seat belt around a
person and objects.
Belts should not be worn
tw isted. In a crash, you
w o u ld n 't have the full width
of the belt to take im pact
forces. T he tw isted belt
against your body could
cause injuries.
P regnant w om en should
also use a lap-shoulder belt.
The lap belt portion should
be positioned as low as
possible on th e hips to
avoid any possible pressure
on the abdom en.
USE C H ILD R ES TR A IN TS
PROPERLY.
Infants and sm all child ren
m ust be seated in an infant
or child restraint system ,
w hich is properly secured
by a lap belt or lap belt
portion of a lap-shoulder
belt. C hildren could be en ­
dan g ered in an accid en t if
th e ir child restraints are not
properly secured in the
vehicle.
R ear-facing child restraints
m ust not be used in the
fro nt seat. T h ey could be
struck by the airbag w hen it
inflates in a crash. If this
happens, a child in the
restraint could be seriously
injured.
A ccording to accid en t sta­
tistics, child ren are safer
w hen properly restrained in
the rear seating positions
than in the fro nt seating
positions.
C hildren too big for child
restraint system s should
ride in rear seats using reg­
ular seat belts. Position
sho u ld er belt across chest
and shoulder, not face or
neck. A booster seat may
be necessary to achieve
proper belt positioning.
