If the reserve tray is empty when paper on the main tray runs out, then the main tray is not lowered. The main tray
lowers only when the drawer is removed.

Paper presence detection
The sensor (tray empty) detects if there is no paper on the tray. The sensor remains covered when paper is on the tray.
When the tray is empty, the actuator lowers to unblock the sensor.
