A service provided by
telephone companies
transmitting information about
incoming calls (callers name
and telephone number)
Call Waiting
A service provided by
telephone companies allowing
you to accept a second
incoming call on a telephone
line already in use; Call Waiting
allows you to 'toggle' from one
caller to the other.
Centrex/Plexar
Central Office Exchange
Service. A type of PBX service
offered by the telephone
company on a 'pay per service'
basis. All call switching occurs
at a local telephone station
instead of a company's
premises; Service may not be
available from local telephone
company
CNG
A tone emitted by fax modems
and most fax machines to
initiate contact with another
fax machine/modem

COM Port
Communications Port; Internal
virtual pathways to transmit
data to and from a PC's exterior
Serial Port and software; most
PCs have four COM Ports: COM1,
COM2, COM3, and COM4. The
software programs gain access
to the COM Ports via system
interrupts (IRQs). Two IRQs are
reserved for the four ports. If
you have two devices using
COM Ports that share an IRQ,
you cannot use the devices
simultaneously. Typically,
COM1 and COM3 use IRQ4,
while COM2 and COM4 use
IRQ3.
Communications Software
Software to send and receive
data over telephone lines via
modems
Compression (Data)
Stores data in a format that
minimizes the file size and
thus the data storage space;
saves transmission time and
capacity
Conference Call
Connecting three or more
parties for one phone
conversation; they can be
internal or external TalkSwitch
parties or remote callers.
Configuration
The way the system is set up;
software settings that define
the Talkswitch system. These
settings determine what the
system will do and when and
how it will do a task. The
