RECEIVING A FAX

In order to receive faxes, paper must be loaded in the paper tray. Load appropriate paper as explained
in "SETTING THE PAPER SIZE OF THE PAPER TRAYS". The difference between vertically and
horizontally oriented 8-1/2" x 11" and 8-1/2 x 11"R paper, and A4 and A4R paper, is automatically
adjusted at the time of reception, so there is no need to load paper in both orientations.
However, when a fax smaller than 8-1/2" x 11" is received, the size of paper used to print the fax will
differ depending on the orientation (horizontal or vertical) of the original in the sending machine.
G
If you wish to use 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" paper to receive faxes, load 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" paper in the uppermost
tray and set the paper size to 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". Only the uppermost tray can be set to 5-1/2" x 8-1/2"
size.
G
If you receive a fax that is larger than your paper, the fax will be automatically reduced before printing,
or it will be divided and printed on two sheets of paper. (See page 158) If the loaded paper is B5 or
smaller, the fax may not be printed in some cases, depending the width and length of the image.
Paper sizes 8-1/2" x 13", A3, B4, B5R, and A5 cannot be used to print faxes.
G
When changing paper used in a tray, first change the paper and then change the paper size setting.
For details, refer to "SETTING THE PAPER SIZE OF THE PAPER TRAYS". (See page 18)
G
Faxes cannot be printed correctly if the actual paper size is different from the paper size setting.
Make sure the paper size setting is the same as the actual paper size.
G
If the width of the paper size setting is larger than the actual paper width, faxes will be clipped when
printed. Once printed, fax data is cleared from memory.
G
If the paper size setting is smaller than the actual paper size, paper jams may result. Fax data is not
cleared from memory when a paper jam occurs. In this case, change the paper so that it is the same
size as the paper size setting.
G
A received fax cannot be printed on paper inserted in the manual feed tray.
G
To receive a fax that is sent in Ultra Fine resolution, the optional fax expansion memory must be
installed. (See page 133)

Methods for Receiving Faxes

Reception
method
Exclusively
Fax reception begins automatically. This method is convenient
for fax (auto
when you have a dedicated fax line separate from the phone line
reception)
for voice calls, or when you are out.
Phone priority
All calls must be answered using an extension phone connected to
(manual
the machine. Start fax reception manually after you have
reception)
confirmed that the call is a fax transmission. This method is useful
when you only have one phone line and you receive relatively few
faxes.
To use this method, an extension phone must be connected to the
machine.
Notes
G
If an extension phone is not connected to the machine, use auto reception.
G
If you connect an extension phone, you must also turn on the extension phone setting using
the key operator program. (See page 148)
G
A fax transmission job can be stored during fax reception. (See page 35)
