Important safety notes
196
Excessive tyre pressure leads to:
an increased braking distance
R
a deterioration in tyre traction
R
increased tyre wear
R
The valve caps on the tyre valves protect the
valve cores from moisture and dirt. Always
screw the valve caps tightly onto the tyre
valves.
In the event of repeated pressure loss in the
tyres, external damage or leaking tyre valves
may be the cause. Check the condition of the
tyres regularly.
Further information on tyre pressure can be
found in the "Tyre pressure" section
Y
(
page 198).
Tyre tread
G
WARNING
If there is insufficient tyre tread, the tyre
traction will decrease. The tyre tread can no
longer dissipate water. This increases the
risk of aquaplaning on a wet road surface,
especially when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions. There is a
risk of an accident.
If the tyre pressure is too high or too low,
tyres may wear differently at different points
of the tyre tread. Regularly check the tyre
tread depth and the condition of the tread
across the whole width of all tyres, there-
fore.
Minimum tyre tread depth on:
Summer tyres: 3 mm
R
M+S tyres: 4 mm
R
For safety reasons, have the tyres replaced
before the legally specified minimum tread
depth is reached.
G
WARNING
There is a danger of aquaplaning occurring,
even if you are driving slowly and your tyres
have sufficient tread depth, depending on
the depth of water on the road. There is a
risk of an accident.
For this reason, avoid tyre ruts and brake
carefully.
Example: tyre tread wear indicator
:
A specified minimum tread depth is a legal
requirement for all tyres. Observe the relevant
legal requirements for each country.
The less tyre tread depth remaining, the
poorer the road grip and handling characteris-
tics of the vehicle, particularly if the road sur-
face is wet or snow-covered.
A tyre has reached the minimum tread depth
when the tread wear indicator (arrow) is flush
with the tyre tread.
For safety reasons, have the tyres replaced
before the legally specified minimum tread
depth is reached.
Tyre condition
Important safety notes
G
WARNING
Damaged tyres can cause tyre inflation pres-
sure loss. As a result, you could lose control
of your vehicle. There is a risk of accident.
Check the tyres regularly for signs of dam-
age and replace any damaged tyres immedi-
ately.
Before starting your journey, check the tyre
condition for:
external damage
R
foreign objects in the tyre tread
R
foreign objects between the tyres (on vehi-
R
cles with twin tyres)
