Driving on sand
Loose sand is a particularly treacherous sur-
face for off-road driving.

Maintain momentum on sand to overcome
rolling resistance and prevent the vehicle
getting bogged down.

Drive in the tyre tracks of vehicles ahead.
X
Pay attention to the vehicle's ground clear-
ance in the case of deep tyre ruts.

Open the bonnet (

If steering spindle : is wet after fording,
lubricate it (MB approval 269.2).
Clean the alternators. Do not use a high-
pressure cleaner.

Close the bonnet (
page 156).
Only direct the compressed-air, steam or
water jet towards the radiator surface in a
vertical direction. Ensure that the radiator
fins are not damaged. Remove any dirt from
the radiator fins. Damaged or dirty radiator
fins can cause the engine to overheat. If
there is a loss of coolant or damage to the
cooling and heating system, have it checked
at a qualified specialist workshop.
