Winter operation
136
i
When the vehicle is operated as a trailer,
there is no electrical connection between
the tractor vehicle and the trailer. Electrical
signals are not transmitted. The vehicle
must be steered in trailer operation and the
lighting system, e.g. the turn signal indica-
tors, must be operated manually.
When you use the vehicle as a trailer, you
i
must not use the service brake.
Connecting the compressed-air lines
X
Apply the parking brake/spring-loaded park-
ing brake of the vehicle to be towed (trailer).
X
Apply the parking brake of the tractor vehi-
cle.
X
Connect brake line coupling head : (yel-
low).
X
Connect reservoir line coupling head ;
(black).
X
Release the parking brake/spring-loaded
parking brake of the vehicle to be towed
(trailer).
X
Shift to neutral.
i
The shutoff valves in the coupling heads
open automatically when the connection is
made.
Disconnecting the compressed-air lines
X
Apply the parking brake of the tractor vehi-
cle.
X
Apply the parking brake/spring-loaded park-
ing brake of the vehicle to be towed (trailer).
X
Detach reservoir line coupling head ;
(black).
X
Detach brake line coupling head : (yellow).
i
The shutoff valves in the coupling heads
open automatically when the disconnection
is made.
After operating the vehicle as a trailer, switch
off the vehicle's ignition and wait until all elec-
tronic displays have gone out in the instru-
ment cluster. This may take a moment.
When restarting the vehicle, no errors in the
brake system may be present in the
tics
menu window (

DANGER
If the exhaust pipe is blocked or sufficient
ventilation is not possible, toxic exhaust
fumes may enter the vehicle, especially car-
bon monoxide. This is the case, for example,
if the vehicle gets stuck in snow. There is a
risk of fatal injuries.
If you have to leave the engine or the auxili-
ary heating running, keep the exhaust pipe
and the area around the vehicle free of
snow. To guarantee a sufficient supply of
fresh air, open the roof hatch or a door on
the side of the vehicle away from the wind.
G
WARNING
If you shift down on a slippery road surface
in an attempt to increase the engine's brak-
ing effect, the drive wheels could lose their
grip. This increases the risk of skidding and
having an accident.
Do not shift down for additional engine brak-
ing on a slippery road surface.
!
Vehicles without acceleration skid control
(ASR): quick changes from slippery to high
grip surfaces whilst the drive wheels are
spinning can result in damage to the differ-
ential gear system. For this reason, avoid
wheelspin of the drive wheels.
At very low outside temperatures, make
!
sure that the engine oil added is of an
appropriate SAE classification. Using engine
oils that are not suitable for very low outside
temperatures may result in engine damage.

in the "Service products" section
