If the compressed-air brake system has a leak
or if there is insufficient reservoir pressure:
J appears in the instrument cluster dis-
R
play.
the J indicator lamp in the instrument
R
cluster lights up.
the red status indicator in the instrument
R
cluster lights up.
X
Start the engine.
X
Let the engine run until a reservoir pressure
of 10 bar for both brake circuits appears in
the reservoir pressure display in the instru-
Y
ment cluster (
page 78).
X
If this reservoir pressure is not reached,
check the compressed-air brake system for
Y
leaks (
page 105).
Observe the display messages regarding the
reservoir pressure and the compressed-air
Y
brake system (
page 85).
Checking the reservoir pressure in the
auxiliary consumer circuit
G
WARNING
If there is a loss of pressure or insufficient
reservoir pressure in the auxiliary consum-
ers circuit, you will require considerably
more force to change gear.
There is a risk of an accident.
Do not pull away, or stop the vehicle as soon
as possible, paying attention to road and
traffic conditions. Secure the vehicle against
rolling away, e.g. with the parking brake.
Have the compressed-air system repaired at
a qualified specialist workshop.
If the reservoir pressure in the auxiliary con-
sumer circuit is too low, the , symbol
appears in the display with a yellow status
indicator.
X
Start the engine.
X
Leave the engine running until the , dis-
play message and the status indicator go
out.
When the , display message and the
status indicator go out, the reservoir pres-
sure in the auxiliary consumer circuit is suf-
ficient.
Checking the steering play
G
WARNING
If the steering play is too great, the vehicle
may no longer be able to keep to a straight
course. The operating and road safety of the
vehicle are jeopardised. There is a risk of an
accident.
Have the steering checked and repaired
immediately at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
X
Start the engine.
X
Turn the steering wheel until the front
wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
X
Slightly turn the steering wheel alternately
to the right and left.
The front wheels should move when the
steering wheel is turned by no more than
30 mm, measured at the steering wheel rim.
If this is not the case, have the steering and
the steering linkage checked at a qualified
specialist workshop immediately.
Checking the lock on the bonnet
G
WARNING
An unlocked bonnet may tip forwards during
heavy deceleration and may strike persons
or objects in the swinging range. There is a
risk of an accident and injury.
Make sure that the bonnet is correctly
closed and locked before each journey.
Bonnet lock indicator lamp
If the bonnet is not correctly locked, the indi-
cator lamp lights up in the instrument cluster.
X
Start the engine.
X
If the indicator lamp does not go out in the
instrument cluster, close the bonnet
Y
(
page 156).
Pulling away
Do not pull away as soon as the engine
!
starts. Let the engine run in neutral for a
short time after starting, until there is suffi-
cient engine oil pressure. Do not drive at
high engine speeds when the engine is cold.
