5.4.4.3 Operation 81. Maintenance of the engine air cleaner

Maintenance of the engine air cleaner with paper filter elements made from special high-
porous cardboard shall be performed every 500 hours of diesel engine operation or if nec-
essary, according to the data provided by the filter clogging indicator.
Maintenance of the engine air cleaner consists in blowing of the main filter element which
keeps dust coming into the air cleaner. Control filter element dirtiness indicates the failure
of the main filter element (paper shutter breach, bedplates unsticking). In that case it is re-
quired to blow off the control filter element and to replace the main one.
Maintenance of the air cleaner shall be performed in the following order:
take off monocyclone 8 (figure 5.4.25), clean the net, swirler and releasing slots of the
monocyclone from dirt and dust;
take off sump 6;
take off main filter element 1. It is not recommended to take control filter element 2 out of
the case.
Blow over the main filter element with compressed air firstly inside, then outside until the
dust is totally removed. To avoid paper shutter breach, air pressure shall be not more than
0,3 MPa.
1 – main filter cartridge; 2 – control filter cartridge; 3 – gasket; 4 – winged nut; 5 – ring; 6 – sump; 7
– housing, 8 – monocyclone.

An air stream shall be directed at an angle to the surface of the filter element. While
maintenance services it is necessary to protect the filter element from mechanical failures
or greasing.
It is forbidden to blow over the filter element with releasing gases or wash it off in diesel
fuel.
Clean the feed pipe, inner surfaces of the casing and the air cleaner sump from dust and
dirt.
Before the air cleaner mounting, check the condition of sealing rings. While mounting,
make sure that filter elements are fixed correctly in the casing and tighten securely the
winged nut manually.
ATTENTION: AFTER THE AIR CLEANER MOUNTING, IT IS REQUIRED TO CHECK
HERMITICITY OF ALL INLET LINE COUPLINGS!
To check hermiticity, use the device KI-4870 GOSNITI or its analog. In case you do
not have such a device, check hermiticity of couplings visually. Damaged coupling ele-
ments shall be replaced.
TRACTOR OPERATION WITH UNTIGHT INLET LINE IS FORBIDDEN.
Decompression of air supply circuit into the turbo-compressor can influence the reliability
of the data provided by the filter clogging indicator in a negative way, as a result of which a
significant portion of unpurified air with heavy concentration of dust can enter the cylinders
via a turbo-compressor. The dust ingress in the oil results in accelerated wear and tear of
cylinder and piston unit of the engine.
